RSC Biomaterials Chemistry Meeting (7th-8th Jan 2016)

This annual RSC Biomaterials Chemistry Meeting for groups working on the synthesis and characterisation of biomaterials is designed to promote biomaterials chemistry research and development, enhance existing links, foster new collaborations and spread expertise.

The 2016 meeting will be held at the University of Birmingham. Maria, Sebastiaan and Mischa will be attending for the Zelzer Group. Sebatiaan will give a talk about his recent work on 3D SIMS analysis of cells and Maria will present a poster showcasing her work on surface directed self assembly.

Opening lecture at the Annual Meeting of the Doctoral School 'Biologie-Sante' Nantes/Angers

logo 01Mischa was invited to Nantes to talk about the research of the Zelzer group at the opening of the annual meeting of the doctoral school in biology and health held on the 10th/11th December. The doctoral school is jointly run by the universities of Nantes and Angers. The event was very engaging with a series of high quality talks and posters and elicited many good discussions.

New Publication

Sebastiaan and Mischa recently published a communication titled ‘Multivariate analysis of 3D ToF-SIMS images: method validation and application to cultured neuronal networks’ in Analyst with Christopher Parmenter, David Scurr and Noah Russell as their co-authors. They demonstrate that by using a training set approach principal components analysis (PCA) can be performed on large 3D ToF-SIMS images of neuronal cell cultures. The method readily p
rovides access to sample component information and significantly improves the images’ signal-to-noise ratio (SNR).

Welcome to Deniz Ugur

Deniz has joined us after spending the first year of his Nanofar PhD project at the University of Angers in France. He will work on the physicochemical characterisation of microparticles designed for cell therapy applications to elicit underlying cell-material interactions.

New PhD students

Two new PhD students have joined the Zelzer group. Alexandra Schindl who is jointly supervised by Thorsten Allers and Anna Croft will be working on a Synthetic Biology Reserach Centre funded project, combining genetic and protein engineering and particle compartmentalisation to fabricate an 'artificial halophile'. Irene Henning will be working on a project led by Morgan Alexander that aims to study the bacterial response to patterned hydrogel materials. Richard Hague and Paul Williams are also involved in this project.

Zelzer Group BBQ

On a nice Saturday afternoon, the Zelzer group met for a group social and enjoyed a mild part of the English summer with a BBQ. This was rounded off by a very tasty Pavlova (thanks Anne!) before the inevitable rain drove us inside to finish the day of with some games and a few not overly talented but good spirited musical interludes (the guitarists need more practice but the drums sounded great).

Mischa presents at the MC12

Image result for mc12 materials chemistryThe 12th International Conference of Materials Chemistry took place in at the University of York from the 20th to the 23rd July. Mischa presented work from the Zelzer group in the Soft Matter Materials Symposium in a talk titled 'Developing reversible enzyme responsive peptide materials and surfaces for improved cell-material integration'. The meeting was vibrant and engaging with an excellent program, including, among others, plenary speakers such as Dan Nocera and Luisa de Cola and a wide range of leading international keynote speakers.
